Morning, afternoon and night. A wedding will occur in a courtyard of a house which was saved from destruction. The morning and the afternoon full of preparations, and the night which ends with a wedding creates the trilogy of a day in the war. Calm attitudes towards life, activated passions and desires, and the night’s agitation. There are two families who live in two houses with gardens which are next to each other. The garden in which the wedding will take place is owned by Melisa and Asım. Melisa is a chemist and before the war, she had been working in a university and in a laboratory. Asım is a plane technician in the airport and he had lost his arm in the first period of war. Bego and Senija lives in the next house. Bego is a musician and before the war, he had worked as a teacher in art academy and backup conductor of the Symphony of Sarajevo. Senija is a physiotherapist. Bego and Senija have a daughter called Tia. Tia had been sent to Czech-Republic with the first permission out of the city.
Morning. Play begins with the sunrise. We get to know Melisa, Senija, Asım and Bego. It has been a very long time since they last went out to the garden. Melisa will organize a wedding for her niece Jasna, who is a math student, with Slobodan, who is a sociologist, in her own garden. The preparations of the wedding begin. The suffering of the townspeople are told in the dialogs, in a tragicomic way.
Afternoon begins with the music rehearsal of Bego and Asım. In the afternoon, the secret relations among the characters are understood. Melisa and Slobodan, who is a Bosnian Serb, had fallen in love before the war. Melisa’s organization of Jasna and Slobodan’s wedding is an act of revenge because Slobodan had an affair with Jasna in Belgrad. Senija has been living an affair with a Macedonian actor called Aleksandar, and is planning an escape to U.S.A. We get to know Melisa and Slobodan’s returnless relationship and the pain they have suffered. As the garden is decorated with light bulbs, the first act ends.
Night. The wedding has begun. Second act begins with live music. The song “Bubamara” is sung and played with accordion, clarinet, tamboura, drums and tambourine with cymbals. All six characters dance, drink and have fun with an agitated joy. Suddenly gunshots are heard. One UN officer has fired his gun by mistake. This mistake also fires a political discussion in Melisa’s garden. Everybody begins to discuss about Croat, Serb and Bosnian politics without even listening to each other. This political discussion in the garden is like a small example of the great war in the country. Senija, who has gone out shortly after the gunshots, returns. It’s like she’s gone crazy. Aleksandar is going to leave the city without her. All the secrets are revealed: The affair of Melisa and Slobodan, Bego’s abomination for his wife, the nightmare Asım has been living with being aware of everything. Yet, everybody hates each other.
A bomb blasted nearby. The electricity is cut. After a while it’s understood that all of them are alive and uninjured. The sun is beginning to rise once again. A new day in the war has begun.
